Image-handling software, such as Adobe Photoshop Elements, Jasc Paint Shop, Microsoft Picture It, and ACDSee, lets you size, touch up, and crop digital images using your computer. Most digital cameras work with both Windows and Macintosh machines.

The file format commonly used for photos is JPEG, which is a compressed format. Some cameras can save photos in uncompressed TIFF format, but this setting yields enormous files. Other high-end cameras have a RAW file format, which yields the image data with no processing from the camera.

Digital cameras typically have both an optical viewfinder and a small color LCD viewer. LCD viewers are very accurate in framing the actual image you get–better than most of the optical viewfinders–but they use more battery power and may be hard to see in bright sunlight. You can also view shots you’ve already taken on the LCD viewer. Many digital cameras provide a video output, so you can view your pictures on a TV set.

Certain cameras let you record an audio clip with a picture. But these clips use additional storage space. Some allow you to record limited video, but the frame rate is slow and the resolution poor.

A zoom lens provides flexibility in framing shots and closes the distance between you and your subject–ideal if you want to quickly switch to a close shot. The typical 3x zoom on mainstream cameras goes from a moderately wide-angle view (35mm) to moderate telephoto (105mm). You can find cameras with extended zoom ranges between 8x and 12x, giving added versatility for outdoor photography. Other new cameras go down to 24 or 28 mm at the wide-angle end, making it easier to take in an entire scene in close quarters, such as a crowded party.

Optical zooms are superior to digital zooms, which magnify the center of the frame without actually increasing picture detail, resulting in a somewhat coarser view.

Sensors in digital cameras are typically about as light-sensitive as ISO 100 film, though some let you increase that setting. (At ISO 100, you’ll likely need to use a flash indoors and in low outdoor light.) A camera’s flash range tells you how far from the camera the flash will provide proper exposure: If the subject is out of range, you’ll know to close the distance. But digital cameras can tolerate some underexposure before the image suffers noticeably.

Red-eye reduction shines a light toward your subject just before the main flash. (A camera whose flash unit is farther from the lens reduces the risk of red eye. Computer editing of the image may also correct red eye.) With automatic flash mode, the camera fires the flash whenever the light entering the camera registers as insufficient. A few new cameras have built-in red-eye correction capability.

Some cameras that have powerful telephoto lenses now come with image stabilizers. These compensate for camera shake, letting you use a slower shutter speed than you otherwise could for following movement. But an image stabilizer won’t compensate for the motion of subjects.

Most new 6- to 8-megapixel cameras come with full manual controls, including independent controls for shutter and aperture. That gives serious shutterbugs control over depth of field, shooting action, or shooting scene with tricky lighting.

HOW TO CHOOSE

The first step is to determine how you will use the camera most of the time. Consider these two questions:

How much flexibility to enlarge images do you need? If you mainly want to make 4×6 snapshots, a camera with a 3- or 4-megapixel resolution will be fine. Such a camera will also make an 8×10 print of an entire image without alteration that looks as sharp as one from a 6- or 8-megapixel model. But to enlarge the image more or enlarge only part of it, you’ll want a 6- to 8-megapixel camera.

How much control do you want over exposure and composition? Cameras meant for automatic point-and-shoot photos, with a 3x-zoom lens, will serve snap shooters as well as dedicate hobbyists much of the time. The full-featured cameras in the 6- to 8-megapixel range offer capabilities that more-dedicated photographers will want to have. Two of the more important capabilities are a zoom range of 5x to 10x or more, which lets you bring distant outdoor subjects close and also lets you shoot candid portraits without getting right in your subject’s face, and a full complement of manual controls that you determine the shutter speed and lens opening. ‘

Once you’ve established the performance priorities that you need from a camera, you can narrow your choices further by considering these convenience factors:

Size and weight. The smallest, lightest models aren’t necessarily inexpensive 3-megapixel cameras. And the biggest and heaviest aren’t necessarily found at the high end. If possible, try cameras at the store before you buy. That way, you’ll know which one fits you hand best and which can be securely gripped. In our tests, we have found that some of the smallest don’t leave much room even for small fingers.

Battery type and life. All digital cameras can run on rechargeable batteries of one of two types: an expensive battery pack or a set of AA batteries. In our tests of the cameras, neither battery type had a clear performance advantage. The best-performing cameras offer upward of 300 shots on a charge, while the worst manage only about 50. We think it’s more convenient to own a camera that accepts AA batteries. You can buy economical, rechargeable cells (plus a charger) and drop in a set of disposable lithium or alkaline batteries if the rechargeable run down in the middle of the day’s shooting.

Camera speed. With point-and-shoot cameras like the ones we tested, you must wait after each shot as the camera processes the image. Most models let you shoot an image every few seconds, but a few make you wait 5 seconds or more. They may frustrate you when you’re taking photos in sequence.

Your other cameras. If you’re adding a camera to your lineup or trading up to a more versatile model, look first for one that’s compatible with the other cameras. If it is, you can share memory cards and batteries. Designs within a camera brand line are often similar. So staying wit the brand you have lowers the learning curve on the new camera for family members who switch between cameras.

Canon has been updating the PowerShot line of cameras up the price scale as well. The well-known Canon PowerShot A720 IS and the A650 IS are mid-ranged P&S cameras to own.

The prices of these in the market hover somewhere between the Rs. 11,000 mark in the grey market.

These cameras both come with 6x optical zoom which is sufficient for most purposes. If you want something a bit cheaper, then the PowerShot A590 IS is one to look for. The price of the A590 IS has dropped to around Rs. 11,500.

However, if you want a no-compromise P&S camera with a good zoom lens and a decent-sized sensor, the new SX110 is the one to look for. It has a better build and is a better performer than the older SX100. Priced at around Rs. 16,000, it comes with a pouch and a 2 GB SD card. Look out for schemes in malls and showrooms where you get a charger and batteries along with the camera.

There are a few new ultrazoom Digital Cameras in the market too. The DSC H7 and H9 from Sony come with 15x optical zoom. Canon’s S5 IS is still in the market and can be found at around Rs. 17,000. Canon has begun to phase them out with the SX10 which has an incredible 20x optical zoom as compared to the S5 IS’ 12x. If you like to gofor an Olympus ultrazoom, then the SP565UZ is an interesting model to look out for. The price is somewhere around Rs. 20,000.

Compact cameras are available at under Rs. 15,000 as well. They aren’t typically liked for performance but for size and portability reasons. The IXUS 80 and 85 IS are the ones from Canon priced under Rs. 15,000. Even the Nikon S52 is available for just under Rs. 13,000. Clearly, the days of extremely expensive ultracompacts have passed. Even Sony’s T77 is not more than Rs. 16,000 in the market.

One of the more interesting categories of Digital cameras is the D-SLR. Prices have dropped and are now just above the price bracket for the ultracompact fashion oriented cameras. The Nikon D40 and the D40X are the entry-level offering from Nikon.

Rumours are that the D40 is priced around Rs. 18,000 in the grey market, but that’s only great if you can find one. If you can’t, then the D40X is the next best bet. The Nikon D60 has been brought in to replace the D40 and the D40X. Canon has a few entry-level D-SLR cameras too — the EOS 1000D and the EOS 400D. Both of these cameras can be bought for around Rs. 30,000 to Rs. 33,000.

The lens supplied with most of these cameras is the 18–55 mm ones. Look out for shops that sell you only the body and give

you the option of selecting a different lens. Shopkeepers and photographers will also tell you that cost of Canon lens is considerably more than the Nikon ones.

We suggest you look out for a Nikon D80. The D90 replaces the D80, which might get phased out soon. The prices for the D80 have been dropping steadily with the launch of the D90. The D80 body itself in the grey market is rumoured to be be around Rs. 35,000 and there are some interesting offers for lenses offered as well.

When you go shopping for a new digital camcorder, you may find the myriad specifications and features overwhelming. Your challenge is to sort through all the hoopla and figure out whether the camera will meet your specific needs.

When reviewing the spec sheet for any new camcorder, pay special attention to these items:

Batteries: How long does the included battery supposedly last, and how much do extra batteries cost? Buy a camcorder that uses Lithium Ion SONY NP-F330 Battery or NiMH (nickel-metal-hydride) batteries. NiCd (nickel-cadmium) batteries don’t last as long and are harder to maintain.
CCDs: 3-CCD (also called 3-chip) camcorders provide much better image quality, but they are also a lot more expensive. A 3-CCD camera is by no means mandatory, but it is nice to have.
Manual controls: Virtually all modern camcorders offer automatic focus and exposure control, but sometimes, manual control is preferable. Control rings around the lens are easier to use than tiny knobs or slider switches on the side of the camera — and they’ll be familiar if you already know how to use 35mm film cameras.
Microphone connector: For the sake of sound quality,the camcorder should have some provisions for connecting an external microphone. (You don’t want your audience to think, “Gee, it’d be a great movie if it didn’t have all that whirring and sneezing.”)

Most camcorders have a standard mini-jack connector for an external mic, and some high-end camcorders have a three-pin XLR connector. XLR connectors — also sometimes called balanced audio connectors — are used by many high-quality microphones and PA (public address) systems.
Optical zoom: Spec sheets usually list optical and digital zoom separately. Digital zoom numbers are usually huge (200x, for example). Ignore the big digital zoom number and focus on the optical zoom factor — it describes how well the camera lens actually sees — and it should be in the 12x-25x range.
Digital zoom just crops the picture captured by the CCD (charge coupled device) and then makes each remaining pixel bigger to fill the screen, resulting in greatly reduced image quality. Optical zoom allows you to zoom in while maintaining maximum video quality.
Progressive scan: This is another feature that is nice but not absolutely mandatory.
Recording format: MiniDV is the most common format, but other formats may make more sense for your needs.
Resolution: Some spec sheets list horizontal lines of resolution (for example: 525 lines); others list the number of pixels (for example: 690,000 pixels). Either way, more is better when it comes to resolution.

Features that are generally less important include
Built-in light: If a CANON NB-5L Battery camcorder’s built-in light works as a flash for still photos, it at least serves a semi-useful purpose. But on-camera lights often have unfavorable lighting effects on your subjects. Rely on other light sources, instead, when you shoot video.
Night vision: Some camcorders have an infrared mode that enables you to record video even in total darkness. If you want to shoot nocturnal nature videos this feature may appeal to you, but for day-to-day videography, it’s less useful than you might think.
Still photos: Many new digital camcorders can also take still photos. Some even have an extra still-camera lens built into the housing. This is handy if you want to shoot both video and stills but don’t want to lug along two cameras — but keep in mind that photo quality usually isn’t the best. An inexpensive 3-megapixel digital camera will take far better still pictures than almost any camcorder.

And then there are some features that are essentially useless. Don’t pay extra for these:
Bluetooth: This is a new wireless networking technology that allows various types of electronic components — including camcorders and computers — to connect to each other using radio waves instead of cables. Bluetooth is a handy technology for wireless cell phone headsets, GPS antennas, and PDAs, but Bluetooth connections are far too slow to be used for video capture.
Digital zoom: Digital zoom makes the image appear blocky and pixelated — so why do it? Ignore the big digital-zoom claims that SANYO DB-L20 battery camcorder manufacturers like to advertise. When you test the zoom feature on a camcorder, make sure you can disable digital zoom. Some cameras automatically switch to digital zoom when you reach the limit of optical zoom, meaning that you could inadvertently zoom in too much and reduce your video quality.
In-camera special effects: Most digital camcorders boast some built-in effects. But why? Special effects can be added much more effectively (so to speak) in your computer, using your editing software.
